Disney SHINES on Mentoring Program
Osceola County, FL: The Osceola Council on Aging has witnessed at-risk, disadvantaged and disabled children become confident and inspired to learn and engage their communities with the support of a caring mentor. Currently produced in partnership with the School District of Osceola County, CHAMP (Children´s Hope and Mentoring Program) continues to serve ...at-risk elementary and middle school students with mentoring activities with senior volunteers. Today the Council received a Disney Helping Kids SHINE award in the amount of $12,000 to continue this inspiring and much needed program.
"This recognition award is inspiring for both the staff members involved and the students and mentors," stated Beverly Hougland, CEO of the Osceola Council on Aging. "When we consider the circumstances of many of these children and their mentors we realize the great benefit this award and the outcomes mean to our community," Hougland continued. "Thanks Disney for helping us meet our mission of enabling the elderly, disadvantaged and disabled reach their potential and SHINE brightly."
CHAMP expanded in 2010 with the inclusion of disabled students from Osceola High School´s Exceptional Student Education (ESE) classes. Mentoring activities take place in a variety of settings both during and after school with program sites located at schools, senior housing complexes and the Adult Day Health Center at the Osceola Council on Aging Barney E. Veal Center. Up to 150 students annually are currently matched with senior mentors in individualized sessions to promote trust and communication within the relationship. The ESE students with disabilities are mentored in the nurturing environment of the Council on Aging Adult Day Health Center where they form friendships with frail elders that also present opportunities for learning and growing. The seniors provide a wealth of knowledge on living with disabilities, the aging process, coping with personal difficulties and the importance of giving back to the community.
